Link your entire home to your iPad

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CBS 8) - Apple's iPad has revolutionized the way people think about computing, and now it's changing the way some people think about their homes. A new app is letting them control almost their entire house from an iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone.

Otto Benson, president of La Jolla Home Theater and Automation, says you can operate lighting, your television, music, motorized window shades -- almost anything electronic in your home, with Savant.

"You can even control appliances, microwave ovens, refrigerators," Benson said.

It's an automation system using Apple's operating system. Benson says the demand for Savant is growing, now that so many people can afford the iPad.

"A normal touch panel this size, 10-inch touch panel, you're talking $3,000 to $4,000 dollars, an iPad is $500," Benson said.

And since the iPad is portable, you have remote access to the things in your home. Benson says many of his clients live in Palm Springs, but have vacation homes in San Diego, and with Savant, they can get their home all set up on the drive here.

"They can connect to the house and can disable the alarm if they have company coming over, or get the pool ready by time to get there," Benson said.

The app is only $9.99, but it's no good unless you have the Savant component system, which will run you anywhere from about $4,000 to a couple hundred thousand, depending on what you want to control.
