Touchpanels and touchscreens are one of the most consistently evolving technologies around today. It’s not hard to imagine the future possibilities that literally lay at the touch of a finger tip, especially when we take into consideration the popularity of handheld devices that rely heavily on simple touch gestures to make calls, surf the Web, and to even create art masterpieces.

Some touchpanel manufacturers that focus directly on home automation have been taking cues from these simpler devices to create a uniform touch tech experience that for end users, while others have made little adjustments to their existing product ranges to enhance the overall user experience.

GAME CHANGERS
Savant Systems made a splash late last year when it threw open the doors to its posh Soho New York City experience and design center. While the 7,500-square-foot space featured a full cache of Savant control products, the mouth-dropping aspect of which wasn’t a touchscreen itself but a proprietary overlaying technology called TrueImage Control. This picture control interface uses photos of each room and integrates them with the technology, allowing end users to tap on specific items in the picture (e.g., a lamp) to actuate control. TrueImage, which also uses control gestures that will be familiar to iPhone/iTouch users, is available on Savants line of in-wall and tabletop touchpanels, including its popular Rosie interface.
